This article explains how to use a single Scrunch API key to power multiple client dashboards in Data Studio by controlling access at the API key level and switching brands using a Brand ID parameter inside Data Studio.
We assume you already know how to connect Scrunch to Data Studio. If not, start here first:
👉 Connecting Scrunch to Looker Studio [now called Data Studio]
Overview of how this works
One Scrunch API key can access multiple brands
Data Studio passes a Brand ID parameter to Scrunch
Each chart can query a different brand using that parameter
No additional API keys are required per client
The most common issues come from API key scoping or Brand ID parameters not being enabled in Data Studio.
Step 1. Confirm your API key can access multiple brands in Scrunch
If your API key is not scoped correctly, Data Studio will only ever return data for one brand.
How to check API key brand access
In Scrunch, go to Organization → Settings → API Keys
Click the three dot menu next to your API key
Select Edit
Under Brand access, do one of the following:
Select multiple brands you want Data Studio to access, or
Deselect all brands to allow access to all brands in the organization
Save changes
This step ensures the API key is allowed to query more than one Brand ID.
If you do not yet have an API key, follow this guide first:
Step 2. Confirm Data Studio allows Brand ID to be modified in reports
Even if your API key is scoped correctly, Data Studio must be explicitly told that the Brand ID parameter is editable.
How to enable Brand ID as a report level parameter
Open your report in Data Studio
Click Resource → Manage added data sources
Click Edit on your Scrunch data source
Click Edit connection
Locate the option labeled
“Allow ‘Enter Scrunch AI Brand ID (numeric)’ to be modified in report”Make sure this checkbox is enabled
Save the connection
If this is not checked, charts will not be able to switch brands.
Step 3. Set the Brand ID per chart in Data Studio
Once the API key and data source are configured correctly, brand switching happens inside each chart.
How to set Brand ID on a chart
Click on a chart in your Data Studio report
In the right sidebar, open the Setup tab
Scroll to the bottom of the Setup panel
Find the Brand ID parameter field
Enter the numeric Brand ID you want that chart to query
Each chart can reference a different Brand ID, even when using the same Scrunch data source and API key. That said, sure to set the Brand ID parameter for each chart in your report.
If you don't see data right away, try giving Data Studio a refresh
Common pitfalls to avoid
Assuming you need one API key per client
Forgetting to enable Brand ID modification in the data source connection
Setting the Brand ID only once and expecting all charts to update automatically
Copying charts without updating the Brand ID parameter
Summary
To create multiple client dashboards using one Scrunch API key:
Ensure the API key is scoped to multiple brands in Scrunch
Enable Brand ID modification in the Data Studio data source
Control Brand ID at the chart level inside Data Studio
This setup is the safest and most scalable way to support agency or multi brand reporting in Data Studio.
