Citation Optimization overview

A guide to get started with Citation Optimization

Citation Optimization shows you the pages AI cites when it answers the prompts you track, and helps you get your brand onto them. Most of those pages belong to someone else: reviews, roundups, guides and news stories. Scrunch ranks them by how much they shape AI's answers and how readily they could be changed to name you. Then it drafts the email to the person who can change each one, and tells you when a page starts naming you.

Nothing is sent from Scrunch. You send each email yourself, and Scrunch keeps track of what happens next.

How it works

  • Find. See every page AI cited for your prompts in the date range you pick. Influence Score shows how much each page shapes AI's answers, and Winnability how readily it could be changed to name you. Fact check flags pages that say something your approved facts contradict.

  • Target. Add the pages you want to win to your targets, or pick from the Suggested targets Scrunch finds for you each day.

  • Pitch. For each target, Scrunch drafts an email to the page's author and looks for public ways to reach them. You check the email, send it yourself, and click Mark as sent.

  • Get placed. Scrunch reads each page you've pitched every week. When a page starts naming you, or a wrong statement is gone, the target moves to Placed and you get a notification.

Where to find it

In the sidebar, go to Optimize > Citation Optimization. If you don't see it, ask your Scrunch contact to turn it on for your brand.

Who can do what

  • Brand admins and editors can add and reject targets, draft emails, look up contacts, and change a target's status.

  • Viewers can see every page, target and status, and read and copy a drafted email.

Before you start

  • Approve your facts in Knowledge Studio. Fact check compares what pages say about you with the Knowledge Studio documents your team has approved, and the emails draw on them too.

  • Track the prompts that matter. Citation Optimization lists the pages AI cites for the prompts you track, so the list is only as useful as your prompts.

  • Keep your competitors up to date. Winnability and suggestions look for pages that name your competitors and not you.
