Pitch a page

The email, the brief and the contacts for a target, and what happens once you've sent it

Once a page is a target, its details panel has what you need to pitch it: an email, the brief behind it, and ways to reach the author. Choose View: Targeted and click the page to open it.

The email

Scrunch drafts the email when you add the target. It uses what the page says, the prompts that cite it, and your approved Knowledge Studio facts. It's usually ready in under a minute, and you can close the panel in the meantime. If there's no email yet, click Draft brief.

When it's ready, the Email section shows:

  • To: who to send it to. Pick any of the page's contacts. The icons beside it copy the address or open the link.

  • Subject, when you're sending it by email.

  • The message, addressed to the page's author.

Click Copy email to copy the subject and the message, paste them into your own email, and change anything you like before you send it. If you picked a contact form, there's no subject line, so Copy email copies the message alone.

For a fresh draft, open the ⋯ menu in the Email section and choose Regenerate.

The brief

Brief explains the pitch, so you know what you're asking for and why:

  • Why this page: why it's worth winning.

  • The angle: what you can offer the author.

  • Talking points: what to say.

For a page that says something your approved facts contradict, it's a Correction brief. It quotes What the page says next to What your approved facts say, and names the document.

Contacts

When you add a target, Scrunch looks for ways to reach the author and the site. It reads the page, the author's profile, and a few of the site's own pages, such as contact and about. Contacts lists what it found under Author (or the author's name) and Site. Best match marks the one to try first.

  • Editorial, Corrections, Press, Partnerships and Contributions say what an address is for.

  • May be a paid placement means it came from the site's advertising or partnerships page.

  • From search: check it's them means Scrunch found the profile by searching for the author's name, so make sure it's the right person.

If nothing's been looked up yet, click Find contacts. To drop a wrong contact, open its ⋯ and choose Remove. It won't come back for this page.

Check a contact before you use it. Scrunch never sends anything, and never fills in a contact form for you.

Community sites and wikis work differently. On a forum, reply in the thread and say who you are. On Wikipedia, use the talk page: say that you work for the brand, and suggest changes rather than making them.

Your contacts and privacy. Scrunch finds contacts only on public pages, and keeps the address of the page where it found each one. It respects each site's robots.txt and keeps contacts for your brand only. They're deleted 180 days after a target is closed or rejected, and 365 days after it's placed. To find an author's public profile, Scrunch may search the web for the author's name and publication. If someone asks to be removed, Scrunch erases their details and won't store them again.

Mark it as sent

After you send the email, click Mark as sent. Check who it was Sent to and the Date (today, unless you sent it earlier), add a note if you like, and click Mark as sent. Scrunch starts watching the page from that date: whether it names you, and how often AI cites it.

Since you sent it

Once a target is Sent, Since you sent it shows:

  • Names you on the page: Yes or Not yet, with when Scrunch last read the page and when it reads it next. For a correction, this is The flagged statement on the page: Still there or Gone.

  • Responses citing this page and Of those, responses naming you: how many a week since you sent it, against the four weeks before.

When it's placed

Scrunch reads every sent page once a week. When a page that didn't name you starts naming you, the target moves to Placed. For a correction, it's placed once the wrong statement has been gone for two reads in a row.

You'll hear about it in the bell, which says how many pages now name your brand or no longer carry the statement you flagged, and in a line at the top of Citation Optimization with See placed. These notifications go out once a day.

If the page already named you when Scrunch first read it after you sent the email, Scrunch can't tell your pitch placed it, so it won't mark it Placed. Names you on the page shows Yes. Mark it Placed yourself from the status button. View: Placed lists every placement, newest first.
